Ten years of concrete actions

On 19 September 2007 our Foundation came into being: The child, the woman, Mother Earth. The right to a life, freedom of expression and thought. The right to not suffer violence, the right to education, the right to have a parent the rights of children – these the causes for which we have worked and for which we shall continue to do so.
Ten years of concrete actions

We prefer small projects with a greater chance of doing something worthwhile, for it is through attention to the small things that we are able to establish a relationship with the beneficiaries, look them in the eye, take them by the hand, hug them, and transmit a force and a trust which has a reciprocal effect.
The child, the woman, Mother Earth. The right to a life, freedom of expression and thought. The right to not suffer violence, the right to education, the right to have a parent. The rights of young persons. These are the themes which the Costa Family Foundation, right from its beginning on 19 September 2017, focuses and works on. Ten years have now passed and looking back it just seems like yesterday that we started out. In a way it is a little like bringing up one’s children: projects becoming mature and autonomous and now involving other thoughts and persons and prospectives. Reflecting brings mixed emotions as one traces their development, but the overriding sensation is one of joy, joy for what has been achieved and joy knowing of our determination to go about and achieve future objectives. My mother once said to me: “Bringing children into the world is a great responsibility and has its fascinations about it. Who knows? In the future it might be the actions of an individual person, your very own child, to one day change the world.” Through the Foundation we try to change something for the better each and every day. In these ten years we have always remained true to the wish and desire of Michl to do something concrete and to do it well. I remember clearly the day when he explained to us the concept of interdependence, whereby all is connected, perhaps more or less distant but never separated. And he quoted a line of John Donne: “No man is an island”. Nothing is more true. Two weeks ago in India, in the Tibetan Children’s Village in Suja, the director there explained to me exactly this concept – that of the budhist vision of interdependence and the absence of ‘I’ as an autonomous element. As he spoke he would have been surprised at my smile for I was thinking of Michl and his words, his teachings, just as a child recalls the words of his or her father. And then, once we arrived at the Jahmtse Gatsal community, in the remote region of Arunachal Pradesh, all of the 85 children there lined up and greeted us individually. It was an incredible feeling and again I thought back and thought of Joe and how she taught me to welcome persons without any prejudice or preconceived opinions, just like a mother does with her own children. The Foundation has many mothers, many fathers, and many children, stretching all the way from Corvara to India, from Africa to Afghanistan. In these ten years there have been many smiles and many concrete actions. It seems as if every single project has shown us how to live and how to dream. The substance of our dreams is made of sincerity, transparence, solidarity and an unwavering faith in the future. We have gone down many roads and consequently we have dreamed a lot. And yes, we have always gone forward, evolved, grown. We have grown both in an inwards and outwards sense – we know that there are many truths to be heard and that everyone has the right to be heard and to be taken into consideration. We prefer small projects with a greater chance of doing something worthwhile, for it is through attention to the small things that we are able to establish a relationship with the beneficiaries, look them in the eye, take them by the hand, hug them, and transmit a force and a trust which has a reciprocal effect. At times som idea might seem somewhat limited but from small things great realities often emerge. It is not said that great things always emerge from a great physical size or effort. It is the will that counts and the determination to carry out an ongoing work in search of real knowledge and results.
Ten years together: many friends, many small steps taken, steps which might not necessarily change the world but which certainly promote the concept of goodness and act in the interests of many. Ten years and more than 700,000 euro of donations and many new prospectives. The harvesting of safron in Afghanistan by a total feminine workforce, “an army of love and compassion” in India, the work against the stigmentation of persons with HIV in Uganda, Sister Patrizia in Togo and the project for bloodbags to save many lives. There is still much to do and I cannot wait for my and our further involvement! Let’s do all the good we can. Ad multos annos!
