Education is dangerous

It’s the same story every year: thousands of flowers are sold on 8 March to celebrate the International Women’s Day. These flowers, however, should not only mean large turnovers or be a brilliant marketing idea. They should, above all, honor women and highlight their importance.
Education is dangerous

“From women's eyes this doctrine I derive: They sparkle still the right Promethean fire. They are the books, the arts, the academies that show, contain and nourish all the world.”
-William Shakespeare-
Every year, at least two million girls disappear for unknown reasons, every minute one woman dies of maternal mortality and still today about three million women worldwide are forced into prostitution according to estimates. About a third of all women worldwide are victims of domestic abuse. How can it be possible that women between 15 and 44 years are more likely to die of domestic violence than of cancer, malaria, road accidents or war?
What society is it that accepts that still today, in 2014, about 5000 women are killed for the family honor? Whose honor, I ask myself?! Of the husband’s morality? Of the male? These homicides are called honor killings; the simple fact that there is a separate name for this kind of murder should raise red flags.
In the past, women fought for the same rights. They fought to show the real value of women, that they are independent-minded and that they can reach important goals.
Let’s just think of women in Afghanistan who can buy a goat and nourish a whole family with the help of a microcredit from ISP (the Costa Family Foundation also collaborates with “Insieme Si Può” for important projects). Or remember all the girls who want to be educated and who fight for access to education despite death threats and many assassinations. Yes, there still are countries where women do not have access to education or do not have the same education and training opportunities as men. We know well: “Education is dangerous. Every educated person is a future enemy,” Nazi-politician Hermann Göring once said.
Our society often tends to ignore these problems. They are far away and none of our business. But they do concern us. And how! We do not have to look far to find courageous women who fight for their children’s life every day. We just have to think of our grandmothers who gave birth to ten children, never complained and, we have to admit, weren’t even allowed to. They did everything to guarantee our parents and us a good life and they gave everything they could, even if it was “just” motherly love. But motherly love shouldn’t be underestimated because it is the most important thing on earth, as it makes us to what we are. Motherly love is like a pair of wings to fly and a helping hand when we lie on the ground.
On the International Women’s Day, we should take the opportunity and thank all important women in our life and all women who fought for the life that we are used to today. And let’s also thank all those women who will improve it even more in future! Thank you grandmothers, thank you mothers, thank you sisters, thank you daughters. Continue fighting, dreaming and hoping every day, because together we can reach many important goals.
