Caught up in emotions.

It's 8.30 in the evening and we begin to go around the tables..
It's Christmas Eve. It's 8.30 in the evening and we begin to go around the tables, but on this occasion we are not carrying plates and taking wine orders. The lines we read to each family are our small gifts, emotions which we wish to share. I approach the table of a family, sat comfortably in one of our stuben, and in a soft voice begin to read a piece from Weihnachten di Joseph von Eichendorf. Whilst I read I catch the eyes of the little girl, she seeming almost afraid. I quickly look away from her and my gaze falls on the mother and I see that her eyes are full. I avoid looking her direct in the eye for I too am filling up. I want to carry on for I must not let this emotion win. I avoid all looks and focus back on the poem. After a while I look up again and this time I see the father, he looking to his wife , but his eyes also are swelling with tears, and a tear or more is coming down her cheeks too. A lump comes to my throat and this time i am unable to continue and complete the poem! It should be easy to but it certainly isn't “Happy Christmas” I am able to murmur and then I slip away.
