A black swan on the roads of the Dolomites

Your heart beats in tune with mine
a new sensation never before known
 and from what I understand
you are the one for me.

A black swan on the roads of the Dolomites

“I admit it: I like to suffer and to be tortured slowly on the curving ascents, and to return home well and truly tired, and to the Black Swan I declare my never-ending love.”
It is in fact my bike, a black Pinarello Paris, that I have called Black Swan – just like the song title of Fedez. Chefs too can listen to hip hop! Didn’t you know? However unlike the words of the song as sung by the rapper from Milan my black swan is not just a passing companion on an adventure which sooner or later will finish, and often as Fedez sings that conclusion is sooner rather than later! My Black Swan is for when I need to escape from the kitchen and go in search of some relaxation, when I want to lose myself in my thoughts and be ‘in the clouds’ and ‘facing the challenge’ of the next bend to navigate. These are the times when I feel the need to search a little peace and quiet in the dolomite world and its crimson peaks. It is now just over two years since I discovered the joy of cycling. Sure, I did cycling as a youngster but I was often out on my bike alone so I decided to give up. Perhaps youngsters just don’t like the effort involved! It is true to say that cycling is a sport requiring an understanding, sometimes meditative in fashion. It may not be the most exuberant of sports but it is certainly a sport which sets you free, even if it is just for a couple of hours. It’s great to be able to get out and explore the passes of Campolongo, Pordoi, Sella, and Gardena. It’s great too to be able to contemplate the composition of a dish whilst hands are firmly fixed on the handlebars. At times too it is also rewarding just to forget all about ingredients, cupboards and inconveniences generally. It was Albert Einstein who said that ‘life is just like being on a bike: if you want to maintain your balance then you need to move!”. Being out on my Black Swan and taking in oxygen deep into my lungs, hearing my heart beat, feeling my brow heavy with sweat is as my way of finding the equilibrium I need for the challenges of life.
It has to be said that cycling is a discovery of wisdom. It is the only means which lets you check out your metabolic energy (just think that the transport of every gram of your body over a kilometre covered in ten minutes, this a nice calm pace, costs us 0,75 calories of energy. The same cannot be said for the car. The car and the bike may have been invented by the same generation of persons but they are directly opposed as symbols of how to make progress in the contemporary world. I know that I will always choose my Black Swan as first option. It is with her that I am able to enjoy these mountains of untold beauty. I admit it: I like to suffer and to be tortured slowly on the curving ascents, and to return home well and truly tired. To the Black Swan I declare my never-ending love and could even work such sentiment into a song to be sung together with Fedez!
