Eros is a real ‘in Gamba’ man

The directors of In Gamba, the team created by Joao Correia, the former Portuguese champion, call on him to be a guide in the various tours that In Gamba organizes across Italy and beyond. In this sunny summer In Gamba and La Perla work side by side to give guests the opportunity to travel the roads and passes of the Dolomites like real professionals.
Eros is a real ‘in Gamba’ man

“…it’s one of the most beautiful places in the world for cycling, opportunities like this don’t come every day..."
Eros Poli is no ordinary cyclist. Almost two metres tall and weighing in at over eighty kilos, perhaps with such a gladiator physique he should have gone in for another sport. But no, Eros is one who pedals strong: he was a gold medalist at the1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles in the team time trial, and got another gold medal in the same event at the World Championships in Villach in 1987 and, above all he was the conquerer of Mont Ventoux during one of the stages of the Tour de France in 1994.
Paradoxically, for someone accustomed to outracing the kings of sprint, the challenge of Mont Ventoux, which the French semiotician Roland Barthes compared to the God of Evil who demanded sacrifices, is one of those immortal pages in the history of sport that remains with us for ever..
The Italy of football is still immersed in the tears of Baresi who missed the penalty together with Baggio in their World Cup Final defeat by Brazil. Pantani finds himself twelve minutes from Indurain and to everyone in the group, Eros powering into a sprint towards Monte Calvo looks more like Don Quixote than Charly Gaul.
He‘s a great long distance racer, on the flat he leaves them standing. Five, ten, twenty minutes: the distance from the group becomes important and everyone expects that, anyway, on the steep climb up that weird mountain that from a distance looks like the moon, Don Quixote will meet his windmills. Instead he finds the challenge of a lifetime and goes on to win by three minutes thirty-nine seconds leaving Pantani, Indurain and everyone else way behind.
He‘s a great guy, Eros; even now after so many years have passed since those two unrepeatable triumphs. So much so that the directors of In Gamba, the team created by Joao Correia, the former Portuguese champion, call on him to be a guide in the various tours that In Gamba organizes across Italy and beyond. In this sunny summer In Gamba and La Perla work side by side to give guests the opportunity to travel the roads and passes of the Dolomites like real professionals.
A resounding success. Due also to people like Eros who, thanks to their incredible experience, know how to pass on an enthusiasm and confidence that are without parallel. Everything is looked after down to the tiniest detail: the F8 Pinarello with electronic gear change and carbon wheels (that’s the one used by Froome) is available to guests along with the services of a mechanic, and a masseur also a flagship in front and a van to follow on with a mobile mechanic’s workshop, dryer, twenty-seven bikes in tow, hydro-cleaning machine, water bottles and various foods. Eros is the guide. He launches the strongest towards the legendary climbs and waits for the slower ones urging them on like a true sports director. Despite his physique, he pedals with strength and grace and keeps going like a train. Guests are made to feel like cycle champions themselves– the real McCoy. And despite the fatigue, their smiles proclaim that they are living a unique experience
On the other hand, to tackle the four passes in this way, as Eros says- and he should know - in one of the most beautiful places in the world to ride, is a chance that doesn’t happen every day. And in the afternoon do not miss the massages that melt away the muscle fatigue. In this way one is well prepared to start the next day, with Eros who is waiting, raring to go on his bike, ready to take you where not only eagles dare, but also the most intrepid cyclists. So next summer we’ll be waiting for you,‘ in gamba‘ more than ever!
